As one of the oldest non-BCS College Bowl Games, the Capital One Bowl is a game steeped in history with very loyal following. The Capital One Bowl was first played in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, and though out the years other corporations including CompUSA and Ourhouse.com have sponsored the Capital One Bowl.

The Capital one bowl has been played at the 51,000 seat Citrus Bowl since its inception with one exception when stadium seating was expanded in the mid 1970's. During this off year the capital one bowl was played on Florida Filed in Gainesville, Florida.

In 2006 as the competition on the gridiron heated up, the competition to crown the favorite Mascot in College Sports began to take off. Students, Alumni and fans from around the country voted for their favorite mascots. In the end, Butch T. Cougar from Washington State University was crowned the winner of the 2006 Mascot Challenge. The Capital One Bowl has couples this intense "fight of the fur" since 2002, the year after Capital One became the title sponsor of the Capital One Bowl.

While the Capital One Bowl is not a BCS game, the game has hosted several stellar competitions. In 2004 when Georgia and Perdue took the filed the competition was so fierce that the game ended in a breathtaking finish in overtime, with Georgia taking the win.
