Minnesota Vikings History

The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1960, playing their first game in 1961.  During most of their first decade in the league, the Vikings struggled, as most expansion teams do, but their steady improvement saw them win the Central Division title in 1968.  The very next season, the dominant Vikings defense helped lead them to the league championship, which was the last NFL Championship prior to the merger between the AFL and NFL.

Since the Vikings first season in 1961, they've had one of the highest winninge percentages in the entire NFL.  As of 2017, the Vikings have won at least three games in every season except for 1962, and are also one of only six NFL teams to win at least 15 games in the regular season.  They the merger in 1970, the Vikings have qualified for the playoffs 27 times, the third most in the league.  They've played in four Super Bowls, although they've yet to win one.  The Vikings currently have 14 members in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.

In the last decade, the Vikings have seen peaks and valleys each season.  They came one game short of the Super Bowl in the 2009 season with Brett Favre under center, falling to the Saints in overtime by a score of 31-28.  In 2014, the team hired Mike Zimmer to replace Leslie Frazier as head coach ot the team.  Under Zimmer, the Vikings saw a return of dominant defense.  In Zimmer's second year as head coach, the Vikings won the NFC North title for the first time since 2009, finishing with a record of 11-5, a top 5 defense, and the #3 seed in the playoffs.  They came up short against the Seahawks after Blair Walsh missed a 27 yard field goal in what was the third coldest game in NFL playoff history.

In 2017, the Vikings won the NFC North for the second time in three years, finishing the season at 13-3 and the number 2 seed in the NFC.  In the divisional round, the Vikings faced off with the Saints.  With less than 10 seconds in the game and trailing by a single point, then quarterback Case Keenum threw the ball deep to wide receiver Stefon Diggs inside field goal range on the right sideline.  Saints safety Marcus Williams missed his tackle, allowing Diggs to sprint down the sidline unopposed for the first walk off game winning touchdown in NFL playoff history.  The play is now known as the 'Minneapolis Miracle'.  The Vikings went on to the NFC Championship, where they were defeated soundly by the eventualy Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

US Bank Stadium

For their first twenty years in the league, the Vikings played their home games in Metropolitan Stadium, before moving to Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in 1982, where they played until 2013.  The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome famously had it's dome cave in under tremendous snowfall.  The Vikings spent two seasons in TCF Bank Stadium, while their new stadium was under consctruction.

In 2016, US Bank Stadium officially opened as the new home to the Minnesota Vikings.  It became the first fixed roof stadium in the NFL since Ford Field opened in Detroit in 2002.  US Bank Stadium hosted Super Bowl LII which was won by the Philadelphia Eagles on February 4th, 2018.  The building currently holds as many as 73,000 fans for a Vikings game, making sure fans almost always have a chance at getting a great seat for a Vikings home game.
