About The PGA Championship
The PGA Championship is one of the four major championships in professional golf, the other three being the Masters, the US Open, and The Open Championship. Winning all four makes the player a Grand Slam winner in golf. There have only ever beee five Grand Slam winners - Gene Sarazen, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods, and Jack Nickluas. Tiger and Jacke ach have pulled off the Grand Slam three different times.
The PGA Championship used to be played in mid-August on the third weekend before Labor Day weekend, and it served as the fourth and final major in golf season. Starting in 2019, the PGA Tournament is being played in May on the weekend before Memorial Day as the seasons second major. PGA Winners are automatically invited to play in the other three majors and the Players Championship for the next five years, and are eligible for the PGA Championship for the rest of their lives. They also receive membership on the PGA tour for the next five seasons and on the European Tour for the following seven seasons. Of the four majors, the PGA Championship is the only to be almost exclusively for professional players.
The PGA was founded in New York City in 1916. The first PGA Championship was held in October of 1916 at Siwanoy Couny Club. Jim Barnes won the very first PGA Championship, receiving $500, and a diamond studded gold medal that was donated by Rodman Wanamaker. For comparions, the 2016 winner, Jimmy Walker, won $1.8 million. Each PGA Champion also is awarded a replica of the Wanamaker Trophy to keep for one year, and a much smaller replica WanaMaker Trophy for them to keep.
The PGA Championship initially was a match play event, played in early fall but varying from May to December. After World War II, the championship was mostly played between May and June, before being moved to early July in 1953, and a few weeks later in 1954. After the 1957 PGA Championship lost money, it was changed to stroke play starting 1958, with a standard 72 hole format of 18 holes per day for four days. During the 1960's, the PGA Championship was played the week following The Open Championship, making it nearly impossible for players to compete in both majors.
Before the 2017 PGA Championship, it was announced that it was being moved to May on the weekend before Memorial Day, starting in 2019. In response, the PGA Tour announced that the Players Championship would be moved back to March the same year.
